Silver Star
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Lee Silver (ASN: 0-1640007), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 5 January 1945, at Herrlicheim, France. When a superior enemy force cut off his Company from contact with the remainder of the Regiment, Lieutenant Silver made his way through intense enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire to his Regimental Commander in order to bring him a message of vital importance. Unable to return to his Company because the enemy had completely surrounded the town in which it was situated, Lieutenant Silver made several trips alone under heavy fire into enemy territory and obtained essential information for his Commanding Officer. His outstanding courage and unfailing devotion to duty reflect distinct credit upon the armed services of the United States and are worthy of the highest praise.General Orders: Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division,
