Obituary from the Hamlin County Republican, Castlewood, SD 1901:

Alexander S. Shepherd was born in Constantine, Mich. on Jan. 6, 1844 and departed this life April 25, 1901 at Castlewood, S. Dak.
When 4 years old the family moved to Ohio where they resided until 1857 when they moved to Winterset, Iowa. The deceased grew up to manhood there; he enlisted in Co. h, 3rd Reg. of Volunteers and saw 3 years of active service during the Civil War. He was married to Mattie Syas in 1867 and in 1881 the family moved to Fairmont, Neb., where they resided until 1885 when they moved to Lake Preston, S.D. While a resident of Lake Preston he was engaged in banking business. The family moved to Bryant in 1888 and he helped to start and organize the Merchants Bank of which institution he was its first cashier. While in Bryant he was also engaged in the mercantile business. In 1892 he purchased a farm in Brantford Township and he and his family resided there until 1895 when the family moved back to Bryant on account of the health of the deceased not permitting him to do farm work. He was taken sick in spring of 1899 and was an invalid until time of death. He moved to Castlewood in December to make his home with a daughter, Mrs. W.B. Boswell. Services were at the Presbyterian Church.
He was one of the most respected citizens of Hamlin County. He took a prominent part in G.A.R. matters and when the national encampment was held in Kansas City a few years ago he was appointed Colonel. He was a lifelong Republican and was a leader of that party in this county. He was also prominent in Masonic circles, being a member of that order and of Eastern Star in Bryant.
