U.S. Congressman. As a skilled blacksmith, he engaged in the manufacture of iron and hand built fire engines, (1832-49). In addition he was listed on the Rochester City, New York, Directory for his craftsmanship. He was a member of the Monroe County Board of Supervisors, (1848-51, 54) and a member of the Rochester City Council, (1843, 56, 71). In 1867, he was elected as an Independent Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving until 1869. After leaving Congress, he established the Rochester Daily Chronicle, was a trustee of the Monroe County Savings Bank and continued his former business pursuits until his death.
