Herbert Schmautz, 69, died Friday at Northern Montana Hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Holland and Bonine Chapel in Havre. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery in Havre.
He was born Aug. 1,1915 in Carson, N.D. and was raised in the Missoula area. He married Lestina (Tiny) Bowman in 1940 in Missoula. He later worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He joined the Army in 1944. After the service he worked at East Base in Great Falls and later for the Great Northern Railway. In 1951, he moved to Havre, where he worked as a machinist for the railroad. He retired in 1977. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post and was a past commander of the post and a member of the Eagles.
He is survived by his wife, Tiny of Havre, two daughters, Patty Lewis of Great Falls, and Lyla Crabtree of Great Falls, a son Alan of Havre, seven grandchildren, a sister Alice Painter of Cabot, Pa. three step sisters, Freda Layer of Auburn, Wash., Erma Schmautz of Missoula, and Elizabeth Barry of California, a half brother Floyd Landsiedel of Havre, a step brother, Harry Landsiedel of Deer Lodge.
Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or to a person's choice.
