Additional information: Son of the late Lt. Col. E. C. C. Sandys (Indian Army), and of Mrs. Sandys. Served in West Africa-Sierra Leone (1898-9). Born at Bareilly, India.

Lt Col Sandy was evacuated from France after being injured on the 1st July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.
He brooded over the loss of so many of his men and was convinced he could have done more. Early in Sept he wrote two letters to two officers who were also in England. To one he wrote he wished he had been killed with his men on the 1st July and to the other " I have come to England to take my life "
On the 6th Sept in his room at the Cavendish Hotel he shot himself in the head with his revolver. He was taken to St George hospital but died a week later without regaining consciousness.
Nine days after his death it was announced that he had received the DSO and was also mentioned in Haigs Despatches.
