He was the widower of Mary Ann (McMahon) Rowen and the son of Patrick Rowen of England. He worked as a sailor and laborer on the docks of Baltimore harbor.

Their daughters were Mary Ann Rowen and Delia Bridget.

Cemetery records show John purchased lots 435F on Aug. 31, 1872. The same record gives March 25, 1891 as his death date.

John Rowen was naturalized at Baltimore City Court, Oct. 1868.

The family story is that John was in a barber chair being groomed in preparation for his daughter Mary Ann's funeral when he died.
