He was an aviation enthusiast, who undoubtedly would have made a name for himself in that field if he had lived longer. Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem, North Carolina was named in his honor. While at his family's estate, the "Reynolda," Smith died under mysterious circumstances with a gunshot wound to the head. His wife, Libby Holman, was an actress and singer; she was indicted for his murder. Later, the charges were dismissed by the Reynolds family. A great portion of Smith's Estate was used as the "core" for the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, which has contributed many millions of dollars to worthy causes in North Carolina.
