Reed was 20, and living in Winterset, Madison Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. I of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Jan. 14, 1862. He was mustered into federal service on Jan. 24, 1862.

During his term of service in the 4th Iowa Cavalry, Reed was promoted to Corporal on Oct. 18, 1862; to 2nd Corporal on July 1, 1864; and finally to 6th Sergeant on June 1, 1865.

He mustered out of the service with his company on Aug. 8, 1865, in Atlanta.

Reed filed for his pension in May 1890, application #775,469, and certificate #581,677. Following his death, his wife, Rosa, filed for her widow's pension on Nov. 18, 1916, application #1,086,400, and certificate #830,268.
