Joseph was the son of Susan Green and William H. Reece. He was Editor and Publisher of a local newspaper, the Greensboro Daily Record, and a prominent citizen in the community. He married Alice McMurray on 26 Sep 1873. They had no children; however, the three younger children of Alice's sister, Leanna McMurray Robertson, were adopted into the family after their parents death.
