John was the son of Richard Holman Redwood of Virginia and Sabrina Caroline Redwood of South Carolina. He attended a military academy in Nashville, Tenn. before beginning courses at the the University of Virginia in 1858, where he studied law. After returning to his hometown of Mobile to work in a law office, he enlisted as a private on 23 April 1861 in the "Mobile Cadets", which became Company "A" of the 3rd Alabama Infantry.

The regiment served in Norfolk until April 1862, when it was attached to the Army of Northern Virginia. John was wounded in the left arm at the battle of Malvern Hill, near Richmond, on 1 July 1862. The doctors decided not to amputate, but infection set it. He lingered until September.
