TENA RATH

Elderly Lady Burned To Death In City Home
Could Not Hear Call of Warning
Mrs. Homer Rath, 75, died of kerosene burns about 4:25 p.m. Sunday at the home,
1409 S. 13th St.
Mrs. Rath was working on wicks of the stove, used for cooking, when her clothes
caught fire, according to her husband, an invalid.
He was in an adjoining room repairing her hearing aid when flames enveloped her
body. He shouted for her to roll on the floor in order to extinguish the fire,
but she could not hear him.
Mrs. Rath collapsed near a kitchen door, Dr. Theodore Teitgen, Manitowoc…
(two lines underinked)…shock and burns.
Her husband told police and the coroner he managed to bring his wheel chair near
enough to her so he could use crutches to remove parts of her burned clothing.
Rath, who is 75, shouted for about a half hour before he attracted attention of
neighbors who used water to douse the fire.
Mrs. Rath, nee Tena Bartel, was born Aug. 15, 1883, in the Town of Hall, Portage
County. She was married to Homer Rath June 27, 1905, at Stevens Point.
Surviving in addition to the husband is a son, Borden, of Couer d’Alene, Idaho,
who was being contacted by police.
Pfeffer Funeral Home said funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending arrival of
the son.
Rath was removed to Holy Family Hospital on orders of Dr. Teitgen.
