One storm on July 12, 1885 is famous for its ferocity and the 10 fatalities associated with the sinking of the steamer Minnie Cook. Sheets of rain, incredible lightening, and gale force winds sank the steamer just inside Wayzata Bay killing the former mayor of Minneapolis A. C. Rand, Mrs. Rand, their two children, their nephew, and five other people.
