Plainview News, January 13, 1928 obituary: Charles Putnam Pioneer Settler, Buried at Beaver: Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Jan. 5th at Beaver for one of the first settlers of Whitewater valley. Charles J. Putnam, who died at Winona Tuesday at the age of 85, had made his home near Beaver more than 70 years. Born at Forestville, Chautauqua county, New York, Oct. 17, 1842, he came west with his parents in 1854 and lived in Minneiska a few months before moving to the old homestead two miles north of Beaver. His father, Pliny Putnam in 1856, built one of the first frame houses in the Whitewater valley, and when the father died in 1881 Charles Putnam continued to live in the house. A brother, A.Z. Putnam, was judge of probate court in Wabasha county for many years, and was active in the practice of law until he died a few years ago in Minneiska at the age of 95. Charles Putnam married Miss Hattie Irwin at Homer Sept 24, 1871. His four sons, Lester of Trempealeau, Wis., Edgar of Elgin and Herbert of Winona, and his wife survive. During his long residence in the Beaver community he was a member and active worker in the Beaver Methodist church.
