Karen was born on April 21, 1944, in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert Orrin and Vivian June (Stevens) Swanson. She was a 1962 graduate of Urbandale High School and had attended Iowa State University. Karen was united in marriage to Robert T. Powell and they made their home in Urbandale. For several years, she was employed with several banks in the Trust Department and Securities. Most recently, Karen was employed with DMOS – Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.C. until her retirement. To Karen, family was always most important. She loved spending time with her family and even traveled all over just to be with them. She cherished those moments and certain family traditions. Karen also enjoyed being outdoors in warm weather and watching TV.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her two sisters, Karlene S. (John M.) Stokka of Urbandale and Kay E. Ward of Denver, CO; brother, Robert P. (Kathy) Swanson of Winterset; and ten nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her loving and loyal companion, her little Shih Tzu dog, "Kiki". Karen was preceded into eternal life by her parents; and husband, Robert Powell.
