City Pastor for 38 Years Dies at 80
A Lutheran minister in the city for 38 years, the Rev. Mr. Gerhard Pieper, 80,
a resident of Skaalen Sunset Home, Stoughten, died at 3:15 pm Wednesday at
Stoughton Community Hospital, following a recent stroke. He was born April 7,
1889 at Menominee, Wis., a son of Prof. August and Emma Kopenig Pieper. He
married Bertha Wernecke on July 23, 1913 at Manitowoc.
Pastor Pieper was graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary, Wauwatosa. His
first charge was at St. John's Lutheran Church, Allegan, Mich. After three years,
he went to Cambria -Pardeeville in 1922 to St. John's Church, Baraboo.
In 1938 he came to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac and in 1960 he became
co-pastor of the newly formed Luther Memorial Church in Fond du Lac. Pastor
Pieper celebrated 50 years in the ministry in August, 1962 and was in the pulpit
until 1966. He retired for several years, going to Brookfield in 1966, then to
Mequon and in October, 1968 to Stoughton.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Vincent Newman of Neenah, Mrs. Earl Martyn
of Mequon, Mrs. Robert Firle of Brookfield and Mrs. Egbert Albrecht of Markesan;
one son, Carl Pieper of Stoughton; 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on May 26, 1962; five sisters and one
brother.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at Luther Memorial Church with
Pastors Waldemar Schuerze and Robert A. Reim officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 pm Friday at Luther Memorial Church, 401 E. 21st St.
Candish Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
