Aged Blacksmith Dead

Frederick Carl Pflughaupt, one of the pioneer blacksmiths of northern Indiana, died at his home in Romney Sunday morning at six o'clock after a four months' illness with a complication of diseases. He was one of Randolph townships best known and most highly esteemed residents and his death caused great sorrow throughout the community.

For sixty years he had been a blacksmith and for more than a half century he had lived in Indiana.

He was born in Mecklemburg-Schwerin, Germany, April 6, 1844. At the age of 12, his father having been killed accidently, he took up the blacksmith's trade and worked at it continuously up to the time of his last illness, dating from November 15, 1915.

He came to the United States when he was a young man and settled in Michigan. Then he came to Michigan City and ran a shop. About 1880 he came to Lafayette and for two years resided in this city. He was the Monon Railroad's only blacksmith here at that time and worked along the south end of the railroad. Thirty four years ago he came to Romney and ran a blacksmith shop there until illness forced him to give up work last November. He was a skilled mechanic and highly respected citizen.

He belonged to the Presbyterian church at Romney and to the Romney lodge of Masons.

Forty six years ago he was married in Michigan to Miss Anna Segnitz and the widow and two children survive. They are Henry C. and Emma Pflughaupt, both of Romney.

The funeral was conducted from the Presbyterian church at Romney Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock Rev. O. A. Prentice officiating: burial at Romney.
