Great-Great-Grandpa Hamilton's birth year comes from the 1850 census. His name is listed variously as Hamblin, Hamlin, Hampton and on his tombstone, Hamilton. Daughter Emma's death certificate gives us his full name of Hamilton Clark Parker. He was called Hamm and was a farmer by trade. Great-Great-Grandpa Hamilton also was a cooper and distiller.

21 November 1861, Hamilton volunteered to defend the south when he joined his neighbors in forming the "Cleveland Marksmen". He was signed into service as a private by O P Gardner. The muster rolls indicate Grandpa was 6 feet tall, was 37 years old and enlisted for 12 months. He signed his "X" when administered the oath of allegiance to the State of North Carolina. The men were mustered into service 31 December 1861, at Camp Mangum, by Captain Thomas D Hogg, and assigned to the 38th Regiment of NC Troop as Company I.

Company muster rolls indicate he was paid by W Lewis on 31 January 1862, but sometime during the weeks between 31 January and 31 March 1862 he was hospitalized at Petersburg, VA. The muster roll for 31 March until 30 June 1862, indicate Grandpa was paid by Captain Mosby on 1 February. It also states he died in Camp on 30 June 1862. His listing on the Roll of Honor states he died 25 May 1862 of disease, at home. A certificate filed on 30 March 1863 with the Confederate Register says he died on 4 July 1862. On 7 October 1862, Grandma Didemia signed for his final payroll check. Her certificate is the first document in which his name was spelled Hamilton.

He was married to Didemia "Dane" Cogdell and was the father of four known children: James William "Bill" Parker, Rebecca Emmaline Parker Newton, Andrew H Parker and Allen Clark Parker. A fifth child born after his death is also listed among his children, Mary E Parker Hastings.
