The first woman in the United States to win the War Production Board Award, Martha Oren saw Eleanor Roosevelt make a special trip from Washington to Detroit to congratulate her, to great publicity. Later, she was a victim of repeated violent domestic abuse from her alcoholic husband, and she kicked him out, raised two sons alone, with great success, with no child support in an era ('50s, early '60s) when there was little sympathy for her position. She was on welfare very briefly, but did not, as a teen in the Depression from a hard working family, accept that, so she then worked hard as a locker room attendant at Denby High School in Detroit for more than 20 years. She went on to win awards and was featured in numerous magazines for the porcelain dolls she made, and could have won awards for all she did for her many friends, who loved her for the strength of her character, and the warmth of her friendship. She was indeed of the Greatest Generation.
