The History of Hardin County Iowa, Past & Present, 1911 lists his birth as 1845 in the location that you have. However, on 2 census reports, both list his birth year as Nov 1848 with his wife's birth year matching what is showing in those census reports. Just passing this along.

WHITTEN RESIDENT DEAD.
John Olmstead Succumbs to Asthma and Heart Disease.

Whitten. November 22--After having suffered several years with asthma and heart disease, John Olmstead, a well-known old resident of Whitten, died this morning at his home. Mr. Olmstead had been seriously ill for two weeks. He was 69 years old.

A widow and nine children survive their husband and father. The children are Mesdames Lillie Poyner and Emma Bucholz of Eugene, Oregon; Ruth Dowler of Peru; and [Bessie, Mrs.] Floyd Lyon, and [Blanche, Mrs.] Byron Schryver of this place; Lee and Ezra Olmstead of Whitten; Edmund of Des Moines; and Albert Olmstead of Foreman, North Dakota.

No arrangements for the funeral had been made up to this afternoon.
