Raised in Spring Lake, 1934 graduate of Grand Haven High School. Graduate of Eastern Michigan University.

October 25, 1942 married Janet L. Stewart in Detroit.
Children: Richard E., Robert S. and Julie Ann

Served in the World War II 311th Air Force Band, Shaw Field, South Carolina.

Music teacher for 29 years at Almont High School, the Detroit area schools and the Charlevoix schools. Longtime band director at Charlevoix, instrumental in the school's receipt of 24 years of Division awards. He was also the Director of the City Band for over 20 years starting in 1948 and Director of the Charlevoix Community Choir. Was awarded Band Director of the Year in 1965. Vice President of the Northern Michigan Community Concerts Association and a pavilion in East Park bears his name in recogonition of his vast musical contributions to the community.

Passed away while a patient at the Charlevoix Area Hospital.
