Thomas Martin "Tom" Nuckols, 75, of Arkansas City, died Monday (January 5, 2004) at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday (January 9, 2004) at the First United Methodist Church of Arkansas City. The Reverend Lance Carrithers will officiate. Burial will follow in the Parker Cemetery.
Tom was born January 11, 1928, in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Dr. Arthur S. and Hazel H. (Martin) Hyatt Nuckols. He was reared and educated in Ponca City. Tom graduated from the Kemper Military Academy of Booneville, Missouri. He later attended the Oklahoma A&M University. Tom served in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1952. He was stationed in Naknek, Alaska Territory and later Sacramento, California. While in Sacramento Tom met and later married Martella Carr on January 12, 1952. The couple lived in Sacramento, Ponca City, Oklahoma; New Orleans, Louisiana; Dallas, Texas; and Sacramento again before moving to Arkansas City in 1963. Tom worked in the engineering department for the General Electric Jet Engine Facility at Strother Field for 10 years and later as a maintenance engineer for Conoco for 20 years before retiring in 1993. Tom was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was very active as a leader of the Boy Scouts of America and as a leader and advisor for the Explorer Scouts. He was a member of the Crescent Masonic Lodge #133 AF&AM and the Shelton Beatty Post #18 American Legion. Tom also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and camping.
Survivors include his wife Marty of the home; two sons Dr. Thomas A. and his wife Cassie of Plainville, Kansas, The Reverend Mark S. and his wife Carla Nuckols of North Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters Vicki and her husband Richard Hensley of Arkansas City, Nancy and her husband Michael Meyer of Littleton, Colorado; one sister Sue and her husband Dr. Phillip Brown of Nashville, Tennessee; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Philomenia Barbara Nuckols, two brothers Jack and Arthur Phil "Bub" Nuckols, one sister Margaret Davis and a granddaughter Karen Nuckols.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
