Marilee Nuckolls Schomburg of Columbus, died Friday, March 9, 2007, at Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 12th, with a private interment in the Nuckolls Family Plot in Linwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 11th, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the home of Laura and Jim Patrick, 2829 Clubview Drive, Columbus, GA.
~Mrs. Schomburg was born October 2, 1924, in Columbus, GA, to Elizabeth Day and James Thornton Nuckolls. She attended Wynnton Elementary and Columbus High School. She attended Hollins College, then graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in English. Later, she received a degree in Nursing from Columbus State and went on to receive a Masters in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia.
~She married Fred H. Schomburg, Jr., in September 1948. She loved her family, her church, books and travel, and will be missed by all those who knew her and loved her. As a youth and young adult, she was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught for many years in the Primary department. She later joined St. Paul United Methodist Church where she was active in the Miller Wilson Sunday School Class, the Altar Guild, the U.M.W., the Chancel choir and Disciple Bible Study. She was honored with the nomination of Quiet Disciple by the U.M.W. Mrs. Schomburg also volunteered for many years and served on the Boards of the Wynnton Neighborhood Network, Goodwill Auxiliary, the Medical Center Auxiliary, and Historic Westville. She was also a member of D.A.C., D.A.R., Phalo Study Club, Students Club, The Wynn House, Historic Columbus, Historic Linwood, Golden Girls, and many other organizations over the years.
~Mrs. Schomburg was preceded in death by her husband, Fred H. Schomburg, her parents and her sister, Caroline Nuckolls Flournoy.
~Survivors include 3 daughters, Lee S. Kent (Mike) of Hamilton, GA, Nelia Partain and Laura Patrick (Jimmy) of Columbus; a son, Rick Schomburg (Jeanne) of Columbus; a niece, Betsy Flournoy of Hamilton, GA.; 14 grandchildren, Cathryn Taylor, Laura Lee Partain, Carson Patrick (Millie), Tippi Patrick, Katrina Patrick, Sarah Schomburg, Collins Schomburg, Jake Patrick and Justin Patrick, all of Columbus, John Crumpler (Beth) of Cumming, GA, Caroline Barfield (Richard) of Hamilton, GA, Kevin Partain of Portland, Oregon, Martha Robbins (Jon) and Mary Patrick of Charleston, SC; and six great-grandchildren.
~The family ask that memorials be made to Columbus Hospice, Wynnton Neighborhood Network, Historic Linwood Chapel fund or the charity of their choice.
