Husband of Minnie Norlin (?-1942); father of Agnes Norlin (?-?). University of Colorado Greek classics scholar. Professor Norlin taught Greek language and literature from 1899 to 1917. Named Acting President in 1917, he served as President of the University of Colorado from 1919 to 1939. Appointed Professor of Humanities in 1930. By appointment of Columbia University, Norlin spent the 1932-33 year as Theodore Roosevelt Professor of American Life and Institutions at the University of Berlin. During his term as President of the University of Colorado Norlin oversaw the growth of the student population from less than 2,000 to nearly 5,000 (for 2004, the Boulder campus has 29,000 students). And, significantly, he worked with the architect Charles Z. Klauder in the development of a master plan and the Rural Italian Renaissance ("The University of Colorado Style) campus and building design. Author of Fascism and Citizenship (1934), Integrity in Education and Other Papers (1926), Isocrates {With an English translation} (1945), An Odious Comparison (1917), The Quest of American Life (1945), Things in the Sadle: Selected Essays and Addresses (1940), and, A Voice From Colorado's Past for the Present: Selected Writings of George Norlin {Selected and Edited by Ralph E. Ellsworth--former Head Libraian of the University of Colorado} (1985). Norlin was also a former trustee of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, as well as a former professor at the University of Chicago.
