Joe L. Netherland was born in Obion County, Tenn., December 18, 1889. He was reared in that county and attended the public schools. He became a Christian in August, 1913. He attended Freed-Hardeman College and David Lipscomb college. He entered David Lipscomb College in the fall of 1913 and began preaching soon after he entered. He began preaching the year that he became a Christian. His first sermon was preached at Meade Chapel, near Nashville, Tenn. H. Leo Boles, president of David Lipscomb College at the time Brother Netherland entered that college, heard him in a society debate and said to him afterwards : "Joe, you ought to preach the gospel." He replied: "Do you think that I can?" Brother Boles replied: "You could preach the gospel if you knew it." Brother Netherland then agreed to try to preach, and was sent to Meade Chapel for his first sermon. Brother Netherland has served as "local minister" with the following congregations: Central Church, Miami, Fla., four years; Sparta, Tenn., nine years. He is now located with the East Main Street Church, Murfreesboro, Tenn., where he has been for more than five years. He has held meetings in Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. - Gospel Advocate, May 30, 1940, 519.
