Dejected “Happy” Nelson Takes Life By Hanging Self
Definite Arrangements For Funeral Services Have Not Been Made
Despondent over financial troubles and ill health, Alfred Nelson, 49, took his life by hanging in his room at the West Hotel Wednesday. His lifeless body was found at approximately 8 o’clock by Nels Dutton, proprietor of the Hotel, and “Happy” Nelson’s brother Emil Norgaard, who went to the room to investigate when Mr. Nelson failed to answer to their knocks on the door.

The coroner, Dr. Roberts, Owatonna, was called and stated that Mr. Nelson had been dead for several hours, the hanging evidently having taken place at about noon Wednesday. The body was taken in charge by the county and was removed to Owatonna Wednesday evening. Arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been made at the time of press.

“Happy” Nelson as he was known to his friends had been employed on county road work and tiling for several weeks, and just recently had a job tiling for the new creamery at Waltham. For several days this week he kept to his room at the hotel. His brother Emil Norgaard called early Wednesday morning to urge his brother to go to work, but received no response. That evening he again tried to summon him from his room, and met with no success so called on Nels Dutton for help. Mr. Dutton climbed upon the stair bannister, peered over the transom and with the aid of a flashlight saw the body slumped over the foot of the bed. The despondent man had used the fire escape rope to take his life.

In February he was in an automobile accident east of Austin, and suffered a severe skull fracture. His life was despaired of at that time and he had since suffered from effects of the fracture and had a deep gash in his head as a result of the accident. Only near relative surviving him is his brother Emil Norgaard, Blooming Prairie.
