Mr. Merriam lived a remarkable life. While as a teenager he decided to tour the country, and made his way through 38 states, working along the way to support himself. His work included firing boilers on ships on lakes for five seasons. He also worked in construction on bridge and dams. He was a farmer in Jackson county from 1937 to 1948. His eyesight failed, and he then became a salesman for the Michigan State Blind Products out of his home and on the streets of Albion. He was assisted by his seeing-eye dog, Bandit. He also sold popcorn out of his home.
