On the tombstone of Reverend William McKennan is the following inscription: "To the Memory of The Reverend William McKennan who departed this life May 3, 1809, Age 90 years. He was born in the North of Ireland and was Pastor of White Clay and Red Clay Churches 54 years; 34 years of which, in connection with the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. He taught the doctrine of his Redeemer with plainness, simplicity and sincerity. He never said to the poor and stranger "be ye fed and be ye clothed and warmed". His heart was open to the distressed. His table was spread for the stranger. This modest stone, what few vain marbles can, may truly say, here lies an honest man. Calmly he looked on either life, and here saw little to regret, or there to fear. Heaven as its purest gold by tortures try'd-The saint sustain'd it but the mortal died. " In memory of Miss Elizabeth McKennan who departed this life Nov. 13th, 1809, Age 50 years."

Another tribute to Reverand McKennan's memory was a thoroughfare named McKennan's Church Road which runs before the site of the Red Clay meeting house in which he ministered for over 50 years.
