After his fathers' death, the family moved to Zionsville where Henry finished his education and at the age of 18 began to teach in the schools.
When the Civil War began, Henry decided to volunteer for the Union Army. At the end of a school day, he locked the door, turned the key over to the directors and enlisted with a local company. He attained the rank of Captain.
He was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga when his company was under heavy fire and suffered many casualties. He was discharged September 19, 1864; he had served his country with distinction, participating in seventeen different battles, and had received several wounds.
After the war, Henry returned to Indiana for
a brief time and then decided to go west.
He migrated to Marion County, Iowa, in 1865, where his mother and step-father had gone earlier. In Marion County, near Knoxville, Henry started a large nursery business.
In the last several years of their lives, Henry and Martha moved into Knoxville. At the time of his death, Henry had been a Mason for fifty-five years and was the oldest living Mason in Marion County. The McCoy's were faithful members of the Knoxville Church of Christ where Henry served as an elder. In addition
