Joseph Hooker Macy was born at Farmland, Randolph County, Indiana on April 11, 1863 and departed this life at his home in west Earlham on November 26, 1946 at the age of 83 years 7 months and 15 days. His first years were spent in Indiana and he came with his parents to Ealham Community in 1875 locating in the Earlham neighborhood where he grew to manhood.
He was united in marriage to Rose Ellen Dook of the Bear Creek Community on May 4, 1886. To this union nine children were born, 3 sons Aaron of Broadus, Montana, Charles of Torrington, Wyoming, and Philip of VanCouver, Washington and 6 daughters, Dora Hougham (Cecil) of Booneville, IA, Mrs. Bertha Rush of West Des Moines, IA, Jo Minor (Bob) of Los Angelos, California, Mrs. Edith Tyer of Waukee, Iowa, Mrs. Rose Rippey of Cambridge, Minnesota and Mrs. Mary Landis (Charles) who preceded him in death 6 1/2 years ago. Joe joined the United Brethren Church when a young man and was worthy of that membership throughout the years. He was a devout follower of his Master and was ever ready to testify for Him. He was licensed as a minister in this organization in 1925 and was in active service for 10 years until declining health forced him to retire.
For one year after his marriage he lived in Des Moines, then he and his wife lived on a farm North of Earlham for 31 years. He lost his hand in an accident, gthen gave up tghe farm and moved to Earlham where he was employed by the schools as a caretaker of the buildings for some 18 years.
Joe was a friend to everyone. His welcome always made you feel better. He was a devout Christian and was ever ready to take His stand for the Right. He had a most cheerful personality and radiated good cheer where ever he went. He was a booster for the better things of life.
We cannot mourn his passing but how we will miss him in home, town, community and church. He served his generation well and is at Peace with God. A good man full of the Holy Ghost.
