Enlisted at Weatherford TX July 11, 1862 as a private in CO K, 5th Reg't Texas Mounted Volunteers (5th Texas Cavalry, CSA.) Captured at Donaldsonville, Louisiana June 28th 1863 and delivered to the Confederate States authorities July 6, 1863 at City Point, Virginia. Eventually discharged at Millican Texas.

Jacob's first wife was Mary M. Sikes, whom he married in Hood Co. TX on 19 Jun 1881. They had 1 child: Anna May Long.

He then married Martha J. Dobbs in Hood Co. TX on 2 Oct 1893 and had 3 children: Eunice Watson Long, Johnnie Henrietta Long, and Madeline Long.

Jacob W Long's parents were James Long b. 1800 d. ___ (some say 1883) and Sarah Whiteside. They married in 1822 in Rutherford Co. NC. They moved to GA about 1839, then to TX in 1851.
