Darlene Mae Hoogestraat was born on a farm north of Kimball, SD on Mar. 11, 1923, the daughter of John and Irene (Washechek) Lomica. She grew up in the Kimball area, attending rural school and graduated from Kimball High School in 1941. She then attended and received her degree in Elementary Education from Souther Normal College in Springfield, SD, after which she taught rural schools and later public schools in Chancellor and Lennox.

On Feb. 19, 1949 she was united in marriage to Donald Hoogestraat by the Rev. Williams.

They retired and moved to Lennox, SD in 1990.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by twin daughters in infancy.

Following hospitalization of one day, Darlene died suddenly at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls on Wednesday evening, Apr. 29, 1998, the result of a massive heart attack. She attained the age of 75 years, one month and 18 days.

Grateful for having shared her life are her widower, Donald; one son, Craig Hoogestraat and his wife, Peggy, of rural Chancellor; one daughter, Dr. Fran Hoogestraat at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one sister, Eldora Russell of Brookings.
