Carol Joan Lies, 82, passed away September 29, 2016. Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with visitation on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo, IA.
Carol was born September 24, 1934 in Britt, IA to Emily (Aitchison) and George Earl Smith. She graduated from Britt High School in 1952. Carol lived in Britt most of her life and later moved to Bondurant for a short while before moving to Des Moines in 1986. She owned Nelson’s Specialty Shop, a clothing store, for 19 years until her retirement in 1986. Carol had many creative talents, baking, sewing, knitting, gardening, weaving, writing poetry and caring for many pets. She also enjoyed time with her friends.
She is survived by her children, Cathy (Howard) Brause of Granger, IA, Mark (LeeAnn) Nelson of Pensacola, FL and Andy (Peggy) Nelson of Algona, IA; her brother, Clifford (Eileen) Smith of Britt, IA; grandchildren, Sarah (Steve) Davidson and Eric Nelson of Pensacola, FL, Rachael (Alex) Ascherl of Dell Rapids, SD, Christine (Jessie) Nelson and Lucas (Katie) Nelson of Algona, IA; and her great-grandchildren, Rider, Connely, Claire, Leo, Oliver, Randy, Stephen, Layne and Rayna. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Don Lies; her parents; sister, Marion; and brothers, Calvin and Alan.
