Died 10:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 1994, at St. James Nursing Care Center. He was 85, a native of Kokomo, Ind., and a longtime resident of University Acres in Baton Rouge. He was a retired engineer with Exxon and a veteran of World War II where he served as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, 6700 Florida Blvd., 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Visiting at First United Methodist Church, 1 p.m. until religious services at 2 p.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Chris Andrews. Burialin Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by wife, Mildred Pearce Learner; two daughters, Evalyn L. Horton and Emily L. Elliott, both of Baton Rouge; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald F. and Peggy Learner, Dallas, Texas; 25 grandchildren, Richard E. and SusanElliott Horton, Sharon H. and David Nason, Cynthia H. and Dale Hall, Charles A. and Suzanne Horton, Alayne and Arnold Wiggins, Donald F. and Beverly Learner, Malcom and Samantha Learner, Robert and Letitia Nachtrieb, Vicki Hunter, William R. and Sue Elliott, John A. and Deborah E. Anderson, John H. and Janel Willett, Louise and Gary Pettigrew; and 16 great-grandchildren, Rick and Leslie Horton, Kelly, Stacy and Brandon Nason, Joseph and Matthew Hall, James Prescott, Eamon Pettigrew, Shelly and Shannon Anderson, Chris Elliott, Lauren Welte, Rachael, Stephanie and Matthew Nachtrieb. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, charter member of Bayou Yarn Benders, past board member of Family Counseling Service, past board member of Camp Fire, member of the Men's Bible Class and XYZ Club at First United Methodist Church and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves. Memorial donations may be made to Learner Scholarship Fund of the Bayou Yarn Benders, c/o Mrs. CaryJackson, 9326 Cal Road, Baton Rouge, 70809, or St. James Place Nursing Care Center.
