(A 1922 newspaper article describing the death of Akke Dijkstra Keuning, although not showing much sympathy and understanding by today's standards.)
Despondent Over Husband's Death
Mrs. Akke Keuning Kills Herself
Mrs. Akke Keuning, residing in Grandview township, two and a half miles west of Corsica, committed suicide by hanging at about 7:30 o'clock Saturday morning, June 3rd, 1922.
On May 19th her husband, Bert Keuning, died after a long illness. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Keuning has been very despondent and undoubedly her mind became deranged, and in a fit of insanity she committed the act that ended her life.
On the morning of the fatal occurence she arose and sent all the larger children out of the house to do the milking, feed the chickens and do other chores. Then going into the basement she attached a rope to a rafter, stood on an egg case, placed the rope around her neck and stepped off. A daughter, about 12 years of age, came in the house, called to her mother, and receiving no reply, went to the basement and there found her. She gave the alarm to the other children who called the neighbors on the phone. J. J. Hoekman was the first to arrive and he cut her down and tried to revive her, but life had gone. Coroner E. Rodenhuis was called, but the evidence was so plain that it was a case of suicide, no inquest was held.
Akke Dykstra was born in the province of Friesland, Netherland, March 29, 1878, and was 44 years, 2 months and 5 days of age at the time of her death. She came to the U. S. in March 1900, going to Edgerton, Minn., for a few days visit with a brother, E. Dykstra.
On March 27th, 1900, she was married to Bert Keuning of Douglas county, S. Dak., and has resided here ever since. To this union 12 children were born, eight of whom are living, and range in age from 2 to 18 years. Two brothers, E. Dykstra of Corsica, S. D., and Martin Dykstra of Alton, Iowa, and three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Fabor, Alton, Ia., Mrs. Lizzie Groendyk, Ocheyedan, Iowa, and Mrs. Gertie Hoekstra, Sibley, Iowa, are also left to mourn her death. They were all present at the funeral.
The funeral was held at the home and at the Christian Reformed church in Corsica Monday afternoon. Interment was made in Graceland cemetery, Corsica, by the side of her husband.
It is a sad occurence and the children and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
