Ketters Lose Second Son
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ketter received an official telegram from the War Department, Tuesday noon, notifying them of the death of their son, PFC Jack Allen Ketter on Iwo Jima, March 7. PFC Ketter was wounded March 3, according to the first telegram received April 6, but had rejoined the Third Marine Division at the front when he was killed. A letter from a buddy arrived Saturday telling of his death and asking for several group pictures. The last letter from PFC Ketter was received February 7 from Guam, where he had been since the week following the landing of the first Marines on that Island.
PFC Ketter left Danville High School to enlist in the Marines, October 15, 1943, the day before his eighteenth birthday. He received his training at San Diego, California and was sent to Hawaii last June and fought on Guam. He was born in Indianapolis, October 16, 1925 and attended grade school in north Indianapolis. He attended Danville High School where he was a member of the of the basketball and football teams.
PFC Billy Ray Ketter, age 23, eldest son of the Ketters, was killed in France, July 20, 1944, while serving as a gunner in an armored tank company. Their youngest son, Harry, drowned in the stream near the park, July 1942, while swimming.
Father Kavanagh of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danville will say mass for Jack and Billy, Sunday morning at the church from 8:30 to 9:30.
Mr. Ketter is employed at the Engineering Metal Products Corporation in Indianapolis, and Mrs. Ketter has been active in Red Cross work in Danville, serving as head of the production department for several years.
