According to the Proceedings of the State Bar Association of Wisconsin, Col. 3, Kalvelage was two when his parent moved from New York City to Milwaukee, where he attended the German English Academy. After graduating he entered the law offices of Smith and Salomon. In 1874 he entered the University of Michigan where he studied law. Upon returning to Milwaukee he entered the law offices of Edward G. Ryan, where he worked for two years. After that he formed a partnership with Richard Burke and started a business in shorthand reporting. Later he moved to Janesville where he became the official reporter of the circuit court.
