He served in the Alabama State Senate from 1850 to 1860 and was a member of the Constitutional Convention from Alabama in 1861 and again in 1865. He voted against the adoption of the Secession ordinance and refused to sign it. Jones County, Alabama was named after him, but was later changed to the name of Sanford County and more recently to Lamar County. He married Lucinda Jane Page. He may have died on 15 April 1880 instead from another source other than the cemetery record.
