JOHNSTON, CARL EUGENE -- Carl Eugene Johnston, 78, of Huey, died July 28, 1989, at his home, following an extended illness. Born July 11, 1911, in Piney Township, he was a son of the late Steele Scott and Mary Ellen Myers Johnston. He was married March 31, 1933, to Cecil Mae Bowser, who survives. A veteran of World War II, he served with the Army in the European Theater where he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in Germany. He was employed as a coal miner and carpenter, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the Sligo United Methodist Church. He also was an active member of the VFW post in Rimersburg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Loyd of Huey; three daughters, Betty Hartle of Huey, Shirley Ramsey of Warren, Ohio and Phyllis Johnson of Rimersburg; three sisters, Mary Wood of Cranberry, Violet Kiehl of Corsica, and Evy Wensel of Sligo; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Twila Shirey, who died Jan. 7, 1988; four brothers, James, Scott, Ray and Paul; seven sisters, Mabel, Ida, Ruth, Edna, Frances, Anna and Helen. Services were at 11 a.m. July 31 at the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo. The Rev. Richard Eddinger of the Sligo United Methodist Church officiated. The family suggests donations be made to Total Home Care Nurses in Clarion or to the Southern Clarion County Volunteer Ambulance Service.
