Charles served as a Technical Sergeant & Radio Operator on B-24J "Bottle Baby" #44-40169, 856th Bomber Squadron, 492nd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Westchester County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 28, 1942 New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in Packing and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24 was attacked by German Aircraft and was shot down and crashed into the Baltic Sea during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
