Doris Humphrey was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and in 1917 moved to Los Angeles to study at the Denishawn School to prepare for a teaching career, however, she turned to theatre and after leaving Denishawn, she and Charles Weidman formed their own school in New York. She began to choreograph and is credited with "The Life of the Bee," "The Shakers" and "Inquest." She directed the dance program at the 92nd Street YMHA and in 1951 joined the faculty of the newly-formed dance department of the Juilliard School of Music. Four years later she formed the Juilliard Dance theatre. In the mid 1950s she joined the advisory panel of the International Exhange Program of the American National Theatre and Academy. She was married to Charles Francis Woodford.
