MAN DIES IN KNIFE FIGHT
One man died and another was wounded Tuesday afternoon in a knife fight in a duplex apartment at 3206 Carsner St., Apt. 6.
Fred H. Houghton, 28, of Inez, died from deep knife wounds on the left side of his neck and was found in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the small apartment.
Johnny Johnson, 47, of 3204 Wildwood St., was taken to DeTar Hospital for treatment of three knife lacerations but was reported in satisfactory condition about two hours later. He suffered cuts on his right chest, his left ear lobe and behind his left ear.
Police said a folding pocket knife and a hunting knife were found in one of Johnson's hands. Both were recovered by Police Officer John Vermillion, the first officer on the scene.
City Detective Bill Imes said the two men had become involved in a disagreement over a personal feud which resulted in a knife fight.
Officer Vermillion received a call of a knife fight at the apartment at 4;31 p.m. and before arriving was told in a police broadcast that there had been a homicide and an ambulance was on the way.
Vermillion found Johnson lying on a porch outside the apartment and Houghton's body inside, lying on his back.
O. T. McAlister, head of the Criminal Investigation Division, and Detectives Imes and Larry Luna were called immediately to secure the area.
Justice of the Peace Alfred C. Baass and Dr. Ted Shields, county health officer, examined the body before it was removed to the county morgue at Citizens Memorial Hospital. Baass said he will await the results of the police investigation before completing his inquest.
A large crowd gathered on the street outside the apartment as police made their investigation.
Carsner Street is a four block street located a block south of Houston Highway near the Southern Pacific tracks between Ben Wilson and Delmar Drive.
Houghton was unemployed. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville B. Houghton of Inez and was born Oct. 7, 1944, in Portsmouth, Va.
Surviving besides the parents are two brothers, Steve Houghton of Dallas and Dave Houghton of New Castle, Pa.
Funeral arrangements were pending Tuesday night and will be announced by McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home.
The fatal stabbing occurred on the heels of a Monday morning stabbing in which Mrs. Vickie Williams Barefield, 19, of 209 E. Second St., was the victim. They occurred less than 40 hours apart. A 16-year-old girl, Nina Jones of 1004 S. Bottom St. was taken into custody.

NO CHARGES YET FILED IN 2 STABBING DEATHS
No charges were filed Wednesday as investigations into stabbing deaths on consecutive days continued.
Criminal Dist. Atty. Robert Seerden conferred with officers Wednesday morning about the Monday morning death of Mrs. Vickie Williams Barefield, 19, of 209 E. Second St., and the Tuesday afternoon death of Fred H. Houghton, 28, of Inez.
"They did not give me any formal reports," Seerden said, adding, "I am not in the position to do anything until the investigations are complete."
Nina Jones, 16, of 1104 Bottom St., who was arrested in connection with the stabbing of Mrs. Barefield outside the latter's residence, is being held in Victoria County Jail on a delinquency charge.
Seerden said there is a possibility that Miss Jones will be certified as an adult.
Meanwhile, Johnny Johnson, 47, of 3204 Wildwood St., remained in satisfactory condition Wednesday night in the intensive care unit at DeTar Hosptial. Johnson, who suffered three lacerations during a knife fight at 3206 Carsner St., Apt. 6, which proved fatal to Houghton, underwent surgery overnight.
Johnson was cut in the right chest, on his left ear lobe and behind his left ear. A spokesman said Johnson would soon be removed to a hospital room.
Police said Houghton received a slash wound on the left side of his throat and cuts on his face and on the back of his left shoulder. He was found lying on his back in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the duplex apartment.
Police also reported that Johnson and Hougton had been residing in the apartment with another person.
Justice of the Peace Alfred C. Baass is also awaiting the completions of both investigations before returning verdicts in the deaths.
Funeral services for Hougton will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Donaho, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Houghton, a resident of Victoria for 13 years, was a member of the Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be Mike Francis, Earl Henning, Gene, Dave and Steve Houghton and Van Campbell.
