Walter Harold "Hop" Hopper passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008.
Born on Apr. 20, 1922 in Canonsburg, Pa., Walt is survived by a large and loving family including his wife India P. Hopper; sister, Jane Hopper Hoon of Alvin, Tex.; children: daughter, Susan Hopper Foster and husband, Jim, of Greenville; son, Sam Hopper, also of Greenville and son, Lin Hopper of Clifton, Tex.; stepdaughters, Sheryl Penny and Kathie Kulikowski of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Nate Hopper, Katie Jackson, Ashley F. Kirkpatrick, Sam Foster and Ben Foster; and great-grandchildren, Kailyn, Abbie and Jacob Hopper, Will Jackson, Trey and Mason Kirkpatrick.
He was predeceased by his wife, Enid Redman Hopper; a stepson, Gary Kulikowski; and a brother, Jack Hopper.
Walt was a gentle man with a distinguished record of service to his country. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force after an exciting 23-year career as a pilot who traveled the world. He flew B-24 bombers during World War II with the 375th Bomb Squadron in the China-Burma-India Theater, which was assigned to the 308th Bombardment Group. After the war, he served as pilot in the Berlin Airlift and as a test pilot. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he worked in the aircraft industry for Ling-Tempco-Vault, located at Donaldson Center, which brought him and his family to Greenville.
Walt had a heart of gold, a quick wit, a ready smile, and a story for all who would listen. He loved a good cigar, a good story, his family, his dog Freebie, and his Plymouth Barracuda. He touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends at Mackey Mortuary on Friday, Jan. 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., immediately followed by a service in the chapel. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville Humane Society or to the Open Arms McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville. Arrangements by The Mackey Mortuary.
