Birth: 1753, Ireland
Death: Feb. 23, 1827
Eau Claire
Butler County
Pennsylvania, USA

Guy H. Hillard is the earliest of my Hillard ancestors that I am able to confirm.

We believe he was married to Margaret Morrison (about 1760 - after 1840) sometime before 1778 in Ireland, yet there is no positive proof.

Many genealogists show him as serving in the Revolutionary War; however, U.S. census records show Guy's first three sons, Alexander, Guy and Charles, were all born in Ireland between 1778 and 1786. Therefore, Guy immigrated to the United States sometime between 1786 and 1790 when he is first found as Guy Hilliard [sic] (Guy Killiard in the index) in the 1790 U.S. census of Fallowfield Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

The 1800 U.S. census, of Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania shows Guy Hilyard [sic] had six daughters, only two of whom we are able to positively identify.
Known children are:
Alexander (1778-1857)
Guy, Jr. (1784-after 1840)
Charles (1786-1870)
John "Irish John" (1793-1851)
Elizabeth Ann (1795-97-1875)
Margaret Jane (1802-1852)

In the 1803 Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, Tax List, Guy Hilliard [sic] is shown owning 350 acres. The North Eastern corner of Slippery Rock Township became Venango Township in 1804.

Guy Hillard died February 23, 1827 in Venango Township Butler County, Pennsylvania. His obituary, published on page 3 of the Butler Sentinel newspaper, on March 3, 1827, reads:

On Friday night, the 23rd. ultimo, Mr. Guy Hillard, Sr. of Venango Township, in the 74th year of his age. He was one of the earliest settlers of this county - an upright and honest man.

From his obituary, we know he died in Venango Township, and it is assumed he died in Eau Claire, previously called Farmington, where his property was located.

Guy died in testate and a letter of administration (H-16 in the Butler County, Pennsylvania archives) was granted to his two sons Charles and John Hillard along with Andrew Donaldson and Hugh McKee on February 26, 1827. Hugh McKee's brother, David Daniel McKee, was married to Mary Tweed McMillan who was the sister of Jane McMillan, who was married to Guy's son, John Hillard, in April 1826, one year before Guy H. Hillard died.

According to family history, provided by David Ross Snyder, he is buried "On his farm, on the fence row." in Eau Claire, Venango Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.

For my g-g-g grandfather. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. And the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
