Betty Hill, born Rebecca Jane Perkins near Nashville around 1890, was an early civil rights leader in Los Angeles. After marrying the former Buffalo soldier Abraham Houston Hill, Betty Hill served as an acting chaplain in the 24th Infantry in the Phillippines upon the retirement of Colonel Allan Allensworth. When her husband retired from the Army, the couple moved to Los Angeles. In 1913 she became one of the founders of the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP. She would eventually serve as one of its vice-presidents and a member of the Executive Committee. In the late 1920s she founded the Women's Republican Political Studies Club, which later became the Women's Political Studies Club, which served as a forum for politically active women, especially African Americans. As a member of the Westside Property Owners Association, she almost single-handedly overturned the policy of having racially segregated swimming pools, and obtained jobs for young African Americans where there were none. In 1940 she served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. She continued to take on active role until ill health forced her retirement. Although she was famous in her time, today she is largely forgotten. However, her legacy continues.
