Sybil Gibson Higley, 71, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at her home in Fruitland after a courageous three month battle with cancer.

Sybil was born in Sanford, Colo., on Dec. 31, 1938, to Alfred Willard Gibson and Marjorie Hutchins Gibson.

She was the third child of five daughters. At the age of six, her family moved to Portland, Ore., and lived in the Guilds Lake area.

She graduated from Franklin High School in 1956 with honors. She was a telex operator for Western Union.

She met the love of her life, Grant Dee Higley, and they were married on May 17, 1957, in Portland, Ore. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. Sybil and Grant welcomed four children into their home: Cynthia, Michael, Lori, and Timothy. Over the years, they also welcomed many foster children into their home.

Sybil was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and she served diligently in many callings. She was primary president, primary teacher, scout leader, Relief Society President three times, and served in the young women's organizations.

Sybil and Grant have served as temple workers in the Boise Temple for the last six years, loving every minute of it. She set up and was the director of the Ontario Family History Center for 10 years and also set up and was the director of the Fruitland Family History Center for 10 years.

Sybil served 40 years as a worker on several library staffs. She taught many people how to do family history and conveyed her love for it through her teaching.

Sybil spent all of her time doing family history work. Sybil had a gift for being able to find names for her own family and she loved helping others find their family also. Regardless of who she helped, those names and dates were in her head always and she never forgot them.

She was regarded as a "breaker of brick walls" in genealogy. If she came across a record that could help someone, she would copy it and share it with them. Her mind was sharp until the end.

Sybil wrote two family history books on the Turpin Family and the Hutchins family. She was very proud of her accomplishment.

She and her friends also extracted all of the cemetery records of Malheur County and made them available on the web.

Sybil felt that her and Grant's legacy was her children and grandchildren. She was very proud of their accomplishments and they gave her great joy.

Sybil is survived by her husband, GRANT HIGLEY, of Fruitland, Idaho; daughter, Cindy, and her husband, Chuck Conner; Ontario, Ore.; son, Mike Higley, and his wife, Martha, of Fruitland, Idaho; daughter, Lori, and her husband, Joseph White, of Windsor, Colo.; and son, Tim Higley, and his wife, Marie, of Middleton, Idaho. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Carrie and Grant Conner; Camille, Ross, and Nathan Higley; Jonathan and his wife, Wendy, Rachel, Daniel and Stephen White; and Tyler and Sara Higley. Sybil is also survived by her sisters, Jana Longstreet and Winona Callahan.

Sybil was preceded in death by her parents; Alfred and Marjorie Gibson; and her two sisters, LaVona Wigant and Ruth Hutchison.
