H. Joseph Hepford, 85, of Dalton, Pennsylvania, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010, at The Jewish Home of Eastern PA in Scranton. He was born on July 1, 1924 in Lower Paxton Twp. and was the son of Ross E. and Hilda Hassler Hepford.
Mr. Hepford is survived by his wife of 57 years, Grace; two daughters: Diane, married to John R. Lenahan, Jr., of Dalton, and Marcia, married to John H. Watt, Jr., of Skaneateles, NY; five grandchildren; and a brother, Collin Hepford of Hbg. He is predeceased by two brothers: David and Samuel Hepford.
Mr. Hepford graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in 1942. He attended Dickinson College and graduated from the Dickinson School of Law in 1948. He served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and as a member of the Air Force Reserve.
Mr. Hepford was engaged in the general practice of law in Harrisburg for more than fifty years. He served as a Member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives from 1962-1976. During this time, he served as Chairman of the House Banking and Savings & Loan Association Committee, the House Judiciary Committee, and a Special Committee to Investigate the Administration of Justice, as well as Secretary of both the Minority and Majority Caucuses. Mr. Hepford was a past president and lifetime member of the Susquehanna Township Lions Club, a District Governor of Lions International, and a co-founder and eight-year officer of the Pennsylvania Lions Eye Research Sight Conservation Foundation. He was also very active in the Royal Arcanum, a fraternal beneficial society: he held that organization's highest office, Supreme Regent of the United States and Canada, and was a life member of the Executive Committee. Additionally, he served as Commander of the Olmstead Squadron of the Air Force Association and as Chairman of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the American Legion, Phi Delta Theta, the Mount Nittany Society, and the Pennsylvania Society. He was an active member of Grace Church United Methodist in Penbrook, where he taught the Men's Bible Class for over 25 years.
Mr. Hepford maintained a love of flying throughout his life. He held a commercial pilot's license for more than 50 years and was an experienced sailplane pilot. Mr. Hepford also enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and spending time in Florida with his family and friends.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00-8:00 pm. on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Hoover Funeral Home, 6011 Linglestown Rd, Harrisburg, Pa. 17112. Funeral and burial services will be private.
