Martin William HATCH
Birth: Feb. 3, 1797
Ferrisburg
Addison County
Vermont, USA
Death: Feb. 14, 1870
Albia
Monroe County
Iowa, USA

First wife - Nancy KELLOGG (1799-1830)
Second wife - Jemima GAGE (1804-1891)

Martin William HATCH. was born 14 Feb 1870, son of Timothy HATCH (1767-1813) and Eleanor GAGE (1776-1840). Martin m. 1st on 4 Feb 1816 to Nancy KELLOGG; m. 2nd on 5 Sep 1830 to Jemima GAGE. Martin William HATCH died 14 Feb 1870 in Albia, Troy Twp, Monroe, IA. Martin was my maternal 2nd great-grandfather.

Martin William HATCH was a veteran of the War of 1812, having served in Capt. Valentine R. Goodrich's Company, Col. Isaac Clark's 11th Regiment, First Brigade, U.S. Infantry, under the command of General Winfield Scott. Martin joined at the Cantonment at Burlington, VA a month after his 16th birthday and served in the same infantry company with his father, Timothy HATCH, who soon died in garrison of spotted lung fever. Martin fought in the various battles of the Niagra Campaign, including Chippewa, where he distinguished himself in battle and received a battlefield promotion to corporal. He next fought at Lundy's Lane, and then finally in the Siege of Fort Erie, where he was severely wounded in a sortie attacking British gun emplacements, losing portions of his right arm and receiving a wound to the abdomen. Martin returned home after the war at age 18 and lived the rest of his life as a disabled veteran. Martin died 14 Feb 1870 at the age of 73 years, 14 days, shortly after arriving with Albia, Monroe, IA.

Martin William HATCH's stone is very crudely carved, perhaps by one of his sons, and notably, the "N" in Martin is backwards. His stone notes his service during the War of 1812, and his grave is also marked by a bronze medallion indicating "US - War of 1812 Veteran."

Martin William HATCH descended from Thomas HATCH of Barnstable. who was in turn his 4th great-grandfather.
