LUNENBURG — Martha Harrington, 84, passed away peacefully on April 2nd at the Keystone Center in Leominster.
Martha was born in Lunenburg, on May 26, 1924, a daughter of the late Lewis L. and Philena (Armstrong) Harrington. She graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1942 and attended Massachusetts State College in Amherst before returning home and earning her bachelors degree from Fitchburg Teachers College.
She began her teaching career in the Amherst School System where she taught for nine years, during which time she earned her masters degree in Education from University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Martha then moved to Needham where she taught at the Broadmeadow Elementary School for 26 years.
Upon retiring in 1987 Marta learned to carve birds with Russell Coburn of Lunenburg and enjoyed sharing her birds with Primary children in Needham, Slidell and Shirley, She was happiest when sharing education with people and singing in Methodist choirs. Her other interests included athletics, gardening, creative writing, art and travel.
She is survived by her brother, Lewis Harrington of Fitchburg; sister, Ann Gampp of Louisiana; nieces, Janice Harrington of Fitchburg and Jennifer Biernacki of Mississippi; nephews, Glenn Harrington of Seattle and Peter Gampp of Louisiana; their spouses, as well as several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, celebrating her life in music, will be held at Lunenburg's United Parish Church, Main St, at 6 pm on Monday, Memorial Day, May 25th. Burial will be in Lunenburg's North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her passion for music may make a donation in Martha's memory to The United Parish of Lunenburg's Memorial Fund in support of their music ministry and mailed to The United Parish of Lunenburg, 39 Main Street, Lunenburg, MA 01462, or to a charity of your choice. The Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes is directing the funeral arrangements.
