John was the son of Thomas and Eleanor Allison Harless of Madison Co., AL, and the husband of Clemenza Moon Harless. John and Clemenza were married June 3, 1867 at Madison Co., AL. John and Clemenza had three sons that survived to adulthood: John Bryant, Claude Duval and Oscar Richard; and four daughters that survived to adulthood, Emily Ellender (married James Henry Lemley), Mary Eliza (died at 19, never married), Anna Daisy (married Geo A. Robinson) and Maggie Lela (married Zook Galloway). John moved his family from Madison County Alabama to Milam County Texas, to Hempstead County Arkansas, and finally settled in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana, near their daughter Maggie, whose husband, Zook Galloway, was one of the owners and operators of the Galloway Lumber Company located at Grabow, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana. It was here that John died early in 1906 and a few months later was follwed in death by his wife Clemenza.
