Johnnie William Haney, Electrocution Victim, Buried in Afton Wednesday
Funeral services for Johnnie William Haney, 24, were held at the Afton Baptist Church, Afton at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 1951, with Rev. A.P. Stokes officiating.
Haney was killed by electrocution shortly before noon Tuesday while working atop an REA pole near Dickens.
An REA employee for about 16 months, the 24-year-old man was working alone doing "routine" maintenance work, near a small cafe belonging to L.A. Sharp. It was Sharp who found the body.
Verdict of death by electrocution was returned to Judge A.B. Winkler in connection with Haney's fatal accident following an inquest in Dickens late Tuesday.
W.M. Hilley, head of the Spur office, said apparently Haney had come in contact with an open line carrying 7,200 volts while working atop an REA pole about two miles west of Dickens.
Haney's body was found at the foot of the pole by Sharp who immediately called for assistance from other members of the crew working nearby. Crew members working with Haney state that he was checking connections on a power line pole when the accident occurred.
Haney was a veteran of World War II. He was married and had a small son. His body was taken to the Campbell Funeral home in Spur.
Haney was a native of Afton. Pallbearers were Dick Richards, Herschel Durham, Max Aldridge, Jim Bridge, Floyd DeGraffenreid and Gene Roberts.
Survivors include, besides his wife and son, four sisters, Mrs. Ruby Lee Allen, Hereford; Mrs. Lucille Joplin, Bovina, Mrs. G. Baird, Hereford and Lena Pearl Haney of Afton and five brothers.
